WASHINGTON – Consumers would be forced to pay 25 percent more for eggs soon if animal rights activists succeed in getting only non-cage eggs sold in the U.S., according to a new study by a respected economic consulting group. That increase would cost consumers $2.6 billion more each year for eggs, a nutritional staple in the American diet. The higher costs would strain Americans’ budgets during a difficult economic climate.

03/19/2009 New Research Shows Hen Health and Mortality Better in Modern Cage Production
ATLANTA – According to new research conducted by the National Veterinary Institute in Uppsala, Sweden, hens housed in modern cage systems are at a lesser risk of mortality, cannibalism and disease than hens housed in free-range and cage-free systems. The study was conducted to identify causes for the increased deaths seen in flocks transitioning from modern cage housing to alternatives ahead of the European Union’s 2012 ban of cage production.

The presence of highly pathogenic avian influenza in parts of Asia and Europe has raised public concern with the safety of poultry and eggs in Europe and other countries including the United States. The U.S. does not have the type of AI strain that is in Asia and Europe. Modern U.S. farm production methods—whereby poultry is housed indoors under strict biosecurity procedures and surveillance—help prevent the spread of Avian Influenza in the U.S., experts say.
